I finally got fed up with all of the ignorant Apple customers trash talking about how secure OS X is so I finally had to go around busting bubbles...thought I'd at least post the chart here since you guys probably don't realize how vast it really is...

I realize it... sadly once I started doing research into getting a mac laptop. Not only does the hardware suck, the OS isn't as secure or nice as everyone makes it out to be. I prefer a unix based system, but Mac OS X isn't it. Ubuntu is shaping up nicely though. I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't take off within the next few years as a major choice for OS provided it keeps the right backing. The new 8.04 Hardy Heron release has some very nice out of the box features that would make it easy for someone to pick it up and use it without linux experience. But yep, Macs aren't all that, especially not for the premium price tag.

Ubuntu has already taken off~ to reach the numbers it has in the time it has for an operating system, especially based on the technical requirements of Linux...the graphics in Ubuntu alone are very impressive for a privately held open source project. Whips Vista and OS X if you ask me (remember the 3d effects are off by default and require a 3d adapter).

If they could get DirectX running natively, it would be game over but that's was Microsoft's sneak attack that is their saving grace. The youthful generation today dominates the consumer market because of their technological influence on even their parents and grandparents. And what do they like to do? Play games...

so what exactly makes one OS better than the other? i've heard this argument a million times, but still don't know exactly what makes which one better than the competition

Pretty much as described above. If it wasn't for the fact that both of my jobs require Windows only software (Adobe Contribute and Visual Studio 2005). I would do alot more programming on linux. Yes there is Mono, but it doesn't have full 2.0 Framework support yet, and there doesn't appear to be any linux software that interfaces with Contribute servers. So, yeah there will always be some back and forth between Windows and Linux for me I believe. :( Tried to go 100% linux last summer. It lasted for around 5 months before I needed windows for work and needed to have a platform for gaming. Consoles are great but not for some stuff.
