holy fuck. well if it makes you feel better i opted for 2xSATA2 drives, 16MB cache, 320GB or 360GB i cant remember. All because newegg doesnt carry the old WD360 anymore. Ill get a third SATA2 drive after the LAN.

Unless you buying a $1000 raid card, you're wasting money anyway. Two drives exceed the PCI bus that integrated controller card runs on~ but hey, whatda I know :D

I capped out my 500GB array long ago~ also filled up my 120GB NAS and the girls 160GB array. Been peaked out for almost a year now.

yeah but 2 drives will be faster than one anyways, even if they max out the bus. just cause the drive says it's 3Gbps doesnt mean it's that fast, most drives acheive a fraction of their rated speeds (most ATA133 drives get 40-60MB per second, thats not even 50% of available bandwidth, and PCI standard bandwidth is about 133 or something near that. Anyways, I think the SATA II controller is on a PCIe 1x link or something of the likes.

I'm not sure ,maybe I'll be in for a surprise when i get the RAID up

Two drives is a good plan~ all of my personal systems use hardware raid 0 but you're still showing adding a third hard drive addition later which is absoutely pointless. And yeah, actually, if you get a perfect set of hard drives, scrub them right before you slap them in an array- they'll hit the sata2 cap. I'm sitting at 293 out of the 300MBs cap on benchmarks. The drives acheive a faction of their speed is a thing of the past if you know what you're doing.

Just like ATA, integrated SATA controllers are almost always on PCI v2.3- the only difference is they connect to the backplane on multiple bus lines, sharing the voltage. Specailized boards will put them on the PCIe bus but since most are using ICH7R, good luck. I'm over my max draw on the bus because I have a Creative X-Fi plugged in along with 3 SATA devices but I keep the soundcard volume signal low and amp it at speakers to make up for the loss.

Stick to two drives and your gtg~

scrub? Ill give them a good washing.

I was thinking about sticking two in RAID0 and putting my old 120gig WD in as a backup.
