So, I tried to use Vista Ultimate for a week or two but it's no good for gaming or complex mulitmedia right now...the final edition is stable and fast when not used with anything else but when you start adding codecs, the multimedia crashes 24/7. All hardware drivers arn't stable so sound only out of one speaker for me and video rendering was unstable. I loved the interface and smoothness but wtb gaming ability so back to XP for my desktop. Laptop has been running Vista for about a year now and is still happy so o well...

My side widgets are custom and not included with vista, with the exception of the weather gadget...background not standard but included in Ultimate. Default theme.

Shiny interface. Fast initial performance, quickly slowing due to software compatibility issues. Security will seem overwhelming to the medicore user.

Verisons are marketing excuses to make more money. If you end up having to get it, Home Premium is the max you need. If you can get Business, it's good too. Ultimate is a useless upgrade. Basic doesn't change anything worthy of spending time on.

Won't be worth upgrading to until early Q3 at least.

I'm going Mac OS X Leopard as soon as it comes out for general purpose on laptop. I'll only update desktop to Vista when I finally need to for DirectX10 games.

That laptop are definately teh suck. The only thing you might be interested in is Games for Windows. Microsoft Live service is about to launch, which includes the Games for Windows Live (The PC Verison of Xbox Live). Lets people on consoles and PC play together for the first time in theory.

is it just me, or is this new OS a memory and processor hog?

Vista can wait, a lack of compatibility with older games is a pet peeve of mine.

Yeah, I'm not all that ready to switch, though I'm going ahead and biting the bullet and getting it put on my new laptop so I don't have to upgrade later for DX10 support.

Vista is OK if you are EXTREMELY careful with software installations. Don't use any autorun.exe files, escalate admin privileges only to software that require it, and run everything that isn't obviously stated as working with Vista in compatibility mode...and your fine. Make one screw up and the whole system grinds to a halt because memory is mismanaged.

MSDN got the final release of Vista in November and I've had it on a laptop since then so I've gotten used to the horrible tag game you play with system rights. In theory, they will have all of that ironed out in the first pack due in the summer I believe, or you can wait until the software you use supports it.

got vista business 2 weeks before retail release. lackluster performance IMO... uses way too much ram. absolute nightmare on some systems (compatibility), lack of fundamental hardware support (nvidia GO series).

I'll stick with good old XP....
